More often than not, cornered soldiers would wave a white flag to get their adversaries to drop their guard, creating an opportunity to shoot them. This happened at Pointe du Hoc on the eve of D-Day: two American Rangers stuck their heads out after seeing a white flag, and were instantly killed by an MG42.
